HMS Otus, Military submarine museum in Sassnitz, Germany.
HMS Otus is a British Oberon-class submarine with a length of about 91 meters, equipped with eight torpedo tubes and original naval equipment from its operational years. The vessel is fully accessible and displays all main sections including the navigation room, torpedo compartment, and engine room.
The submarine entered Royal Navy service in 1963 and served for more than three decades before being decommissioned in 1991. During this period, it participated in major operations including the Falklands War and missions in the Persian Gulf.
The vessel displays the living quarters and work spaces where the crew spent their time, showing how cramped the conditions were and how sailors managed daily life aboard. Visitors can understand the routines and challenges of serving in such confined spaces.
The vessel is open daily with longer hours during warmer months and shorter hours in winter, allowing visitors to explore the different sections. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes since entering tight passageways and climbing stairs throughout the ship are necessary.
Visitors experience authentic operational sounds of the submarine through specialized audio systems while exploring the navigation spaces and torpedo sections. These sound effects provide a vivid sense of what daily operations sounded like aboard.
