Sassnitz Wildlife Park, Wildlife park in Sassnitz, Germany.
Sassnitz Wildlife Park is a zoo located on the edge of town, situated between Steinbach stream and Jasmund National Park. The facility houses approximately 250 animals from around 60 species, including eagles, monkeys, fallow deer, and wildcats, along with a petting zoo for direct animal interactions.
The facility was founded in 1963 and operated continuously until November 2016, when it closed due to avian influenza cases and structural concerns. After major renovations that began in July 2019, the park reopened with newly redesigned habitats for species from Jasmund National Park.
The facility serves as an educational center where visitors walk through nature trails and learn about the animals and plants that live on Rügen Island. The setting encourages people to observe species in their natural surroundings and understand how they fit into the local landscape.
Visitors should take time to explore the enclosures along the nature trails and paths, and make sure to visit the petting zoo area. Planning your route through the grounds helps you see all sections efficiently and leaves enough time to spend with the animals.
The new habitats were designed specifically to replicate natural conditions for species that live in the nearby Jasmund region. This approach connects the zoo directly with the wilderness of the adjacent national park.
