St. John's Church, Gothic Revival church in Sassnitz, Germany.
St. John's Church is a Gothic Revival building constructed from red brick with a distinctive octagonal tower rising about 33 meters high. The structure sits on a hilltop between Sassnitz and Crampas, defining the local landscape with its bold architectural form.
Construction began in 1880 following architect Adolf Gerstenberg's designs and the building was consecrated in 1883. It replaced an earlier, simpler open-air worship space that had stood on this location.
The church serves both Protestant and Catholic communities, functioning as a shared spiritual space in the town. You can see how the interior is arranged to welcome people from different faith traditions.
The church is easily reached from Stubbenkammerstraße and its hilltop location makes it visible from many parts of town. Regular services occur throughout the week, offering chances to visit the interior during these times.
Before the current building, an open-air chapel occupied this spot with an altar made of soil and grass benches arranged in a semicircle. This simple setup shows how worshippers originally used this location before the formal structure was built.
