Fockenstein, Mountain peak in Bavarian Prealps, Germany
Fockenstein is a peak in the Bavarian Prealps topped with a monumental cross, situated between the towns of Gaißach and Bad Wiessee. The summit sits at approximately 1,564 meters and can be approached from multiple directions through forest and mountain paths.
The peak served as a landmark for travelers and shepherds crossing the Bavarian Prealps for centuries. A monumental cross was added to the summit later, becoming the defining feature visitors see today.
The mountain forms part of the European long-distance path E4, connecting 395 peaks across different regions through maintained hiking trails.
The hike from Bad Wiessee takes about two hours, while the route from Lenggries via Hirschtalsattel is somewhat longer. Sturdy hiking boots and a rain jacket are recommended, as mountain weather can change quickly in this region.
On clear days, the view from the summit extends far beyond the Prealps toward the higher mountains beyond. The open view northward reveals the distant outline of the Zugspitze on the far horizon.
