Hertenstein Castle

Hertenstein Castle is a ruined fortress site located on elevated terrain above Billingsbach. The grounds feature an artificial defensive moat surrounding the hilltop, with scattered stonework marking where the main tower and associated structures once stood.

The fortress was built in the early 13th century as a residential stronghold for the Hertenstein family. Over subsequent centuries it gradually lost importance and eventually fell into ruin.

The castle's architectural elements include rustication buckel stones, which are squared-off stones with rounded outer surfaces used in the keep construction.

The site sits on a hillside southwest of Billingsbach village and is accessible on foot. The open ruins can be visited anytime, though they offer little shelter from rain or wind.

The fortress sat along a major trade route connecting the Kunstzelsau region to towns in the Jagst valley. This location allowed it to monitor and control the movement of merchants and travelers passing through.
