Deutsches Tapetenmuseum, Wallpaper museum in Kassel, Germany
The Deutsches Tapetenmuseum exhibits over 23,000 wallpaper specimens, displaying decorative wall coverings from the 14th century to present day designs.
Founded in 1923 by wallpaper merchant Gustav Iven, the museum survived World War II bombings in 1941, managing to preserve 6,000 pieces from its collection.
The museum documents the evolution of German interior design through its collection of historical wallpapers, reflecting changing social preferences across five centuries.
The museum is currently closed for construction of a new building at Brüder-Grimm-Platz, scheduled to reopen in autumn 2025 with 1,500 square meters of exhibition space.
The collection includes a hand-painted paper wallpaper depicting a Chinese imperial funeral procession, which underwent extensive restoration for future permanent display.
