Dom-Römer Project, Modern redevelopment district in Frankfurt, Germany
The Dom-Römer Project is a modern residential district in Frankfurt located between Römerberg and Domplatz. It comprises 15 reconstructed buildings and 20 new structures designed with traditional architecture, along with apartments, shops, and restaurants.
After World War II destruction, the area was rebuilt with brutalist architecture from the 1970s onward. A major transformation began in 2012 to restore the medieval character the area once held.
The buildings display Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical elements that reflect Frankfurt's historical identity. Walking through, you notice detailed facades and traditional materials that shape the neighborhood's character.
Visitors will find residential apartments, shops, and restaurants throughout the area with direct access to surrounding squares. An archaeological garden displaying Roman remains is also accessible and easy to explore on foot.
Local residents participated directly in the planning process and helped shape design decisions. This citizen involvement proved essential to balancing historical authenticity with practical modern urban needs.
