St Peter's Church, Gothic church in Altstadt-Süd, Cologne, Germany
St Peter's Church exhibits pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, with its tower rising prominently in the southern district of Cologne.
The church's surviving west tower dates from 1170, while the main structure underwent construction between 1513 and 1525 on Roman and Romanesque foundations.
The building houses Rubens' masterwork 'The Crucifixion of St Peter', commissioned in 1638 and displayed since 1642 as part of its art collection.
The church maintains regular opening hours and functions both as an active Catholic parish administered by Jesuits and as a center for contemporary art.
During World War II bombings in 1943, the structure suffered complete destruction except for its foundations, leading to extensive restoration completed in 1960.
