Tierpark Gera

Tierpark Gera spreads across about 20 hectares of forested grounds hosting roughly 600 animals from around 70 species. The grounds combine zoo functions with forest park features, including a miniature railway and open areas to explore.

Founded in 1962 as a small enclosure for local animals, it grew into the largest zoological facility in East Thuringia. This gradual expansion made it a significant nature institution in the region.

Local schools use this place as a learning site where students actively participate in guided tours and animal care activities. It has become an important hub for nature education and environmental awareness in the region.

The grounds feature pathways through wooded sections with various stations and rest areas for breaks. Sturdy footwear is recommended because of the natural forest floor.

Visitors can enter the Barbary macaque enclosure directly and watch these primates without barriers separating them. This rare close experience creates an unforgettable moment between human and animal.
