Cappenberg Castle, Medieval monastery and castle in Selm, Germany
The former Premonstratensian monastery stands on the Cappenberg hill at 109 meters elevation, featuring Gothic architecture with Baroque modifications from the 18th century.
Founded in the 12th century by Count Gottfried von Cappenberg, the monastery underwent transformations during the Thirty Years' War and became a Prussian estate in 1803.
The castle houses exhibitions of the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, presenting collections that document the religious and cultural development of Westphalia.
The castle opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, offering guided tours through its halls and exhibitions.
The abbey church contains a rare gilt bronze bust of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa dating from approximately 1160.
