Golzheimer Friedhof, Cemetery and architectural monument in Düsseldorf, Germany
Golzheimer Friedhof is a cemetery and architectural monument with walking paths connecting gravestones, sculptures, and mausoleums in varying artistic styles from different periods. The grounds display a range of burial monuments, from simple stones to elaborate artistic works that mark different eras.
This burial ground was founded in 1805 as Düsseldorf's first municipal cemetery, replacing the previous burial site at St. Lambertus Church in the old town. The construction of Klever Street in 1905 divided it into two sections and required the relocation of many historical graves.
The grounds hold gravestones and memorials dedicated to important Düsseldorf figures, including artists whose work shaped the city's history. Walking through, you notice how the inscriptions and monuments reflect the lives of people who mattered to the community.
The grounds now function as a public green space open year-round for walking and visiting. Because the tombstones are protected under monument conservation laws, visitors should move respectfully through the site.
After Klever Street cut through the grounds in 1905, a large number of older graves were moved to the North Cemetery. This makes the current site only a partial record of the burial ground's full history, with many of the earliest burials now elsewhere.
