Ruselkraftwerke, Hydroelectric power plant in Bayerischer Wald, Germany
Ruselkraftwerke is a hydroelectric facility in the Bavarian Forest that generates electricity through multiple turbines and water reservoirs. The installation harnesses water from the Höllbach and Sauloch storage areas to produce power for the surrounding region.
The facility was built between 1919 and 1920 on the grounds of a former sawmill and received official water rights authorization in 1929. The delayed approval significantly pushed back the original startup date.
The facility represents German industrial development and engineering excellence, serving as the primary power supplier for Deggendorf until 1960.
The site is located in a forested area of the Bavarian Forest and is accessible by local roads. Visitors should note that this is an active industrial facility and not all areas are open to public access.
Since 2019, the facility has stopped its pumped storage operation and now relies only on a run-of-river turbine at Sauloch. This shift was a response to the rise of solar energy as a competing power source.
