Loretto-Kaserne, Military barracks in Tübingen, Germany
Loretto-Kaserne is a former military compound in Tübingen covering three hectares, with two main troop buildings along Katharinenstrasse and supporting structures arranged throughout the grounds. The complex now functions as a residential neighborhood with shops, medical practices, and educational facilities integrated into the redeveloped site.
Built between 1914 and 1916 as Neue Kaserne for Infantry Regiment 180, the compound received its current name in 1938 to commemorate a World War I battle. French forces occupied it after 1945 and maintained their presence until 1991.
The location carries the mark of its French occupiers, who called it Quartier Zimmer from 1945 to 1991 and created a separate community life within its walls. This influence shaped the identity of the neighborhood and remains visible in how people use and experience the space today.
The neighborhood is easy to access and well-equipped with services for daily needs spread throughout the converted site. Walking through the area allows you to experience both the original military buildings and the new residential development that surrounds them.
The original parade grounds behind the main buildings were transformed into residential neighborhoods while the historic front structures were preserved. This transformation shows how a military site became home to civilian community life.
