Hochgratbahn, Cable car system in Oberstaufen, Germany
The Hochgratbahn is an aerial lift in Oberstaufen that carries visitors higher into the mountains. The journey takes about 15 minutes and climbs roughly 900 meters in elevation to reach approximately 1,700 meters above sea level.
The lift was built to bring people to a protected mountain area that spans the border between Bavaria and Austria. Today the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park connects visitors with the high terrain on both sides.
The base station serves as a gathering point for people heading into the mountains, whether for summer hiking or winter sports. Many day trips and outdoor adventures in the region start from this spot.
The ride requires no special preparation and suits most people. Parking is available at the base, and the mountain station provides access to trails for hikes at various difficulty levels.
The system undergoes regular maintenance in autumn and spring, closing for inspections during these seasons. A few weekend trips in November are sometimes offered even during maintenance, making visits then feel special.
