Ureibe bei Steibis

The Ureibe bei Steibis is a female European yew tree with a hollow trunk measuring approximately 5 meters in circumference and numerous branches forming a wide crown. It grows at about 1,070 meters elevation at the foot of Mount Seelekopf in this mountain region.

This yew tree dates back at least 600 years, making it one of the oldest trees in the region. Its long history is woven into the mountain landscape of Oberstaufen and has witnessed generations of hikers passing through.

The tree holds protected status as a natural monument in Oberallgäu district and ranks among Bavaria's most significant heritage trees within the Nagelfluhkette nature park. Hikers notice its presence as a landmark and as evidence of nature's endurance in the mountain landscape.

The tree is reachable from the Hochgrat hiking route by following the standard path that passes through the Lower Lauchalpe area. The location lies along a well-marked hiking trail and is accessible during the hiking season.

Despite its advanced age and high-altitude location with a short growing season, this tree produces abundant fruits every year. Such fertility is unusual for trees growing in such extreme mountain conditions.
