Lavakeller Mendig, Rock cellar in Mendig, Germany.
The Lavakeller consists of underground galleries and shafts extending three square kilometers beneath Mendig at a depth of 32 meters.
The mining of black basalt in these cellars dates back to prehistoric times, with Romans developing extensive quarrying operations during their occupation of the region.
The network of underground chambers evolved from a mining facility into essential storage spaces for 28 local breweries during the 19th century.
Visitors need to descend 150 steps or take an elevator to access the cellars, where guided tours lasting 70 minutes explain the mining and brewing history.
The natural temperature in these underground chambers remains constant between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius throughout the year, making them perfect for beer storage.
