Kiefernstraße

Kiefernstraße is a residential street in Flingern-Süd with painted house fronts that run for several hundred meters. The buildings were originally constructed as worker housing and now blend apartments with art studios and community spaces.

The street was laid out in 1902 as housing for steelworks employees and served as a typical worker settlement for decades. In the 1980s the area changed dramatically when squatters moved into vacant buildings and created new forms of community life.

The area is home to residents from many different backgrounds, creating a diverse community visible in daily street life. Local gathering spaces host regular activities that bring neighbors together and reflect the neighborhood's multicultural character.

The street is easy to walk through and offers several cultural venues to explore, including music studios, clubs, and skateboarding areas. Keep in mind that some locations have limited opening hours, so it helps to check ahead for events.

After conflicts in the 1980s, squatters received legal rental agreements in 1987 instead of eviction orders, creating an unusual resolution. This arrangement allowed the original community to remain and the neighborhood to keep an experimental character to this day.
