Bumpman

Bumpman is a modern sculpture in Düsseldorf Central Station that shows a figure with organic swellings across its body surface. The work has an uneven, textured appearance that makes it both unsettling and engaging to observe.

The work was created by German artist Paloma Varga Weisz, who trained in woodcarving before developing her artistic practice. She later studied at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, where she refined the techniques that shaped this piece.

The figure draws from old German printed pamphlets that depicted unusual body forms and references the schrat, a forest creature from German folk traditions. Visitors can notice how the work connects to historical ways of showing the fantastical and strange.

The sculpture is located inside the train station and can be visited during regular operating hours without any admission charge. Since it sits in a busy public space, viewing it during quieter times of day makes for a better experience.

Despite its unsettling appearance, the sculpture is a deliberate choice to make travelers pause and reflect. In a place defined by constant motion, it asks viewers to think about their own physical presence and imperfections.
