Kleiner Steinberg

The Kleiner Steinberg rises to 541.9 meters in the Kaufunger Wald region, featuring basalt formations and dense forest covering its upper sections.

From 1736 until 1961, the mountain sustained extensive mining operations, extracting brown coal and basalt through a network of industrial facilities.

The former mining administration building now functions as the Waldpädagogikzentrum Haus Steinberg, educating visitors about regional forest ecology and natural resources.

Visitors can access the mountain trails from parking areas at the Waldpädagogikzentrum or the village of Steinrode, with multiple path options available.

The abandoned mining pits have transformed into the Steinbergseen, a collection of small lakes that create distinct ecological zones around the mountain base.
