Sieben Zeilen, Historical workers' settlement in Old Town, Germany
Sieben Zeilen is a craftworkers' settlement in Nuremberg consisting of seven rows of two-story houses, each measuring approximately 7 by 8 meters. Each house contained a workshop in the basement and living quarters on the upper floor.
The settlement was built between 1489 and 1524 on filled moats to house Swabian weavers. These craftspeople came from Augsburg and Ulm and were recruited to strengthen Nuremberg's textile industry.
The settlement shows how craftspeople lived and worked together in very small spaces. The narrow houses reveal the daily conditions in which weavers and their families carried out their tasks.
The houses are located along the Historical Mile between Webersplatz and Maxtor in eastern Nuremberg. Visitors can view the exterior of the houses and get a sense of medieval living conditions while walking through a historic street.
Only two original houses survived World War II without damage. The remaining ones were rebuilt in 1966 and 1973 based on precise measurements and historical plans, preserving the medieval proportions.
