Knopfmacherfelsen

Knopfmacherfelsen, Scenic viewpoint in Donaudurchbruch, Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Knopfmacherfelsen is a limestone cliff rising above the Danube Valley that offers views of the river and the railway line running between Tuttlingen and Inzigkofen. From this point, visitors can see across the valley with its winding river course and surrounding hills stretching into the distance.

The site takes its name from a button maker named Fidelis Martin who fell from these rocks in 1823 after being led there by a mysterious figure. This dramatic event became central to the place's identity and local memory.

From this vantage point, the Benedictine Abbey of Beuron and Castle Bronnen come into view, two significant structures that shape the landscape below. These landmarks reflect the religious and aristocratic heritage that remains visible in the valley today.

The viewpoint sits about 50 meters from Berghaus Knopfmacher, which serves as a landmark and lies along the road connecting Beuron and Fridingen an der Donau. The location is easily accessible on foot, and the surrounding area offers walking routes through the nature reserve.

At several spots beneath the cliff, the Danube River seeps underground and resurfaces later at the Aachtopf spring system, a remarkable geological phenomenon. This hidden water passage demonstrates how the limestone formation absorbs and carries water underground.
