Lee Barracks, Military barracks in Gonsenheim, Mainz, Germany
Lee Barracks is a military installation in the Gonsenheim district comprising numerous structures spread across a large site. The compound includes residential buildings, administrative facilities, and support structures designed to house personnel and their families.
The facility was constructed in 1937 as part of German military expansion and initially served German forces. Following World War II, French forces occupied the site, and American troops arrived in 1949, establishing the name Lee Barracks.
The barracks complex incorporated recreational facilities including a bowling alley and ballpark, creating a self-contained community for American military personnel and families.
The site is no longer an active military base and has been transformed after its closure. Most buildings now serve civilian purposes, primarily as residential units for students and residents of Mainz.
The barracks commemorate Captain Robert Elward Lee, who received a posthumous Distinguished Service Cross for his mission in November 1944.
