Commandry of Nemerow, Medieval commandry in Groß Nemerow, Germany
The Commandry of Nemerow was a Knights Hospitaller facility in Groß Nemerow that served as an administrative center and lodging place. The building provided shelter for pilgrims and travelers as well as space for the religious and administrative activities of the religious military community.
The commandry was established in 1298 as a Knights Hospitaller stronghold in the region and played an important role in the order's network for over 250 years. Its end came in 1552 with dissolution during the Reformation, when the order lost its power in northern Germany.
The Knights Hospitaller used this place for religious ceremonies and cared for travelers in need of assistance. The community was part of a wider network of commandries spread across northern Germany.
The site is located in Groß Nemerow and is accessible by public transportation that runs regularly to the village. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the grounds can be uneven, and it is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible.
A tombstone of commander Ludwig von der Groeben remains at the site and shows the presence of actual historical figures who led this facility. Such burial stones are rare direct connections to the people who lived here centuries ago.
