Marienkirche, Romanesque church in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany
The Marienkirche features a cross-shaped floor plan with four towers positioned at the corners and measures 31.4 by 26.4 meters at its base.
Built between 1222 and 1240 under Bishop Gernand, the church replaced a Wendish temple dedicated to the Slavic deity Triglaw on Harlunger Hill.
The church contained a venerated statue of Mary that attracted numerous pilgrims from across Europe until the Protestant Reformation changed its religious status.
The structure stood until 1722, when King Frederick William I ordered its demolition due to its deteriorated condition and the local population's use as a quarry.
The church incorporated sixteen columns supporting a central dome reaching 18 meters high, while its towers extended 37.5 meters above ground level.
