Quadenhof, Medieval brick fortress in Gerresheim, Germany.
Description
The Quadenhof is a three-story brick building with a steeply pitched roof and a baroque cupola at its peak. Its facade features several late medieval cross-windows, most notably one above the main entrance crowned by a central gable.
History
Built between 1427 and 1436 for Godert von Broichhusen, the structure received its name when the Quad von Raede family acquired it in 1458. These ownership changes document its importance as a property held by wealthy merchant families of the region.
Culture
The building reflects the prosperity and craftsmanship of its era through its architectural details and construction methods. Its brick walls and distinctive roof shape show building traditions from the late medieval period that remain scarce in the Düsseldorf region today.
Practical
The monument stands in Gerresheim near Gerricusplatz and is visible from the street, with the facade details viewable from multiple angles. Plan time to observe the window patterns and roofline from different vantage points around the building.
Did you know?
The eastern facade contains not just cross-windows but also an early sanitary drainage feature called an Aborterk, revealing a practical solution from the medieval period. This overlooked detail offers insight into everyday functionality rather than just decorative aspects of the era.
