The building was designed in 1805 by architect Johann Georg Christian Hess for Jewish banker Wolf Zacharias Wertheimber. The original structure sustained heavy damage during a 1944 bombing and burned substantially.
The house served as home to philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, who lived and worked here from 1859 to 1860. During his stay, he used the rooms to write and develop his philosophical ideas.
