Schillat cave, Show cave in Hessisch Oldendorf, Germany.
Schillat cave is a limestone show cave in Hessisch Oldendorf that extends 400 meters underground with a paved pathway and modern lighting throughout. The interior maintains a constant temperature year-round, making it comfortable to explore.
The cave was discovered by chance in 1992 during limestone quarry operations and then prepared for visitors. It opened to the public in 2004 and has since become a popular destination for cave exploration.
The cave displays calcite formations and fossils from the Jurassic period that visitors encounter along the passage. These finds tell the story of when this region was covered by ancient seas.
An elevator lowers visitors 45 meters down to reach the cave passages and provides wheelchair access throughout. The best time to visit is between April and October when the cave operates regularly.
A viewing area inside features a film presentation showing other caves in the region that remain closed to the public. This allows visitors to see places that would otherwise stay hidden.
