Sternwarte Tübingen

Sternwarte Tübingen is an observatory at the University of Tübingen equipped with an 80-centimeter reflector telescope housed in a 5-meter dome at 470 meters elevation. The facility supports both research and observation activities for educational and visitor purposes.

The observatory was founded in 1995 when the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the university merged several facilities. Since its creation, it has served as a major research center at the university.

The observatory serves as a teaching hub where students gain hands-on experience with modern observation methods. Visitors can directly experience how stargazing contributes to understanding our universe.

Visitors must complete a training program and receive staff instruction before using the telescope. The facility is located on the university campus and easily accessible, but access requires participation in courses and training sessions.

The observatory uses specialized cameras with multiple filters and a spectrograph system that relies on mercury and neon sources for wavelength calibration. This technical setup enables precise observations and scientific measurements that go beyond simple telescope viewing.
