Labyrinth

The Labyrinth is a sandstone rock formation in Sächsische Schweiz with heights ranging from 5 to 15 meters. The stones create a network of narrow passages, deep crevices, and irregular cavities that together cover about 3.5 hectares.

The formation received its name during the 19th century Romantic period, when artists and travelers explored the rocky region. It has been protected since 1979 due to its geological value.

The name comes from the maze-like passages that local stories have long described as a test of navigation skills. Visitors today still experience how the tight corridors can disorient even those paying close attention.

A numbered path guides visitors through the rock formations, but independent exploration along unmarked routes is also possible. The passages are tight and the ground can be uneven, so sturdy footwear and careful attention are important.

The sandstone rocks display hourglass-shaped walls and bowl-like depressions formed through chemical weathering of calcium-rich sand. These distinctive shapes develop as water gradually dissolves softer layers, leaving behind unusual structures.
