Napoleonstein, Sandstone rock formation in Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany
The Napoleonstein rises from the forest floor as a distinct sandstone formation, offering views across the Elbe River valley and surrounding hills.
Napoleon Bonaparte commanded his troops from this strategic vantage point during their advance toward Bohemia on September 15, 1813.
Local inhabitants maintain a tradition of searching for a golden bullet near the rock formation, which according to regional folklore brings good fortune.
The rock formation connects to an 11.2-kilometer hiking trail with 224 meters of elevation change, accessible from the parking facilities at Leupoldishain village.
The surrounding rock formations served as filming locations for international productions including Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and Cloud Atlas.
