Monbijou Theater, Open-air theatre in Monbijou Park, Berlin-Mitte, Germany.
Monbijou Theater is an open-air venue with wooden seating built directly on top of a former World War II bunker. It sits within the green expanse of Monbijou Park, offering performances under the sky surrounded by trees and grass.
The theater began in 1994 as Hexenkessel Hoftheater in Schönhauser Allee before moving to Monbijou Park in 2007. It closed temporarily in 2018 and reopened in 2021 thanks to efforts by the association Zwei Drittel e.V.
Classic works by authors such as Goethe and Shakespeare are performed here during the summer months, drawing audiences to the park. The venue also features improvised performances, which bring spontaneity and variety to the program.
The venue is easily reached by public transportation from central Berlin and is set within the park, so allow time for a walk through the grounds. Wooden seating is provided throughout, and it is wise to bring a jacket or umbrella depending on weather conditions.
The foundation of the theater rests on the remains of a World War II bunker, giving the site an unusual history. This feature shows how the space was consciously transformed to create something new from historical remnants.
