St. Marien, Aachen

St. Marien is a modern church in Aachen featuring a distinctive octagonal layout that extends to its bell tower. The building was constructed in 1981 and occupies the site of a previous structure.

The original building took shape between 1858 and 1863 in Neo-Gothic style but suffered severe damage during World War II. This destruction prompted the community to rebuild the structure in 1981.

The church preserves religious artworks including a Pietà and an octagonal baptismal font that visitors encounter inside. These pieces come partly from artist Johannes Lange and shape how the interior feels.

The building sits close to Aachen's main train station and is easy to reach on foot. The church serves the local community and is typically open to visitors during regular hours.

The original bell tower once held a large gilded statue of Mary, donated by Pope Pius IX. This striking figure stood in the open spire and was a notable feature of the skyline.
