Wipper im Ostharz, Special Area of Conservation in Harzgerode and Südharz, Germany.
The Wipper im Ostharz is a conservation area in the eastern Harz region that follows the Wipper River and preserves natural riverbanks lined with alder and ash woodlands. The protected zone encompasses several kilometers of river corridor alongside forest habitats and wetland environments.
The area received designation as a protected site in 2000 from the European Union to safeguard its natural habitats under the Habitats Directive. This protection was established to ensure the preservation of the river ecosystem and its biodiversity.
The conservation area connects multiple communities including Harzgerode, Südharz, Mansfeld, and Sangerhausen through its environmental protection initiatives.
The area spans several kilometers along the river with access points near the surrounding communities. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since riverbank conditions vary with the seasons.
The area hosts multiple bat species that use the river valleys as hunting grounds, as well as rare species such as European brook lampreys and great crested newts. This diverse wildlife makes it one of the region's most significant natural habitats.
