LSG Palingener Heide und Halbinsel Teschow, Protected landscape in Nordwestmecklenburg District, Germany
LSG Palingener Heide und Halbinsel Teschow is a protected landscape covering roughly 3,200 hectares, encompassing heathland, forests, and a peninsula that extends along the Trave River. The area comprises diverse natural zones with lakes, wetlands, and open spaces that together form a varied ecosystem.
The area received formal protection status in April 2011, closing the final gap in a biotope corridor along the former inner German border. This decision was part of efforts to safeguard the natural landscape of the region for future generations.
The landscape draws its name from the nearby village of Palingen and appears as open heathland interspersed with wetlands and water bodies. Today the biotopes here provide habitat for rare plants and animals that visitors can encounter during walks.
Visitors can explore multiple nature reserves within the protected area on foot or by bicycle, including shoreline zones along lakes and river landscapes. The best time to visit is during warmer months, when paths are easily accessible and more birds and wildlife are visible.
The area contains inland dune formations from the Ice Age, now covered with forests that give the ground a distinctive shape. These sandy soils support rare biotope types found nowhere else in the region.
