Welfen-Kaserne, Military barracks in Weingarten, Germany.
Welfen-Kaserne is a former military compound in Weingarten containing multiple buildings originally designed for training and administration. Today, the Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences occupies several structures on the grounds.
Built in 1912 for the Württemberg Army, it initially housed the machine gun division of the 6th Württemberg Regiment. The site later adapted to accommodate different military units and underwent modifications based on changing needs.
The name references the Welf dynasty, a medieval noble family with deep roots in the region. This historical connection remains part of the local identity today.
The grounds are spacious and can be explored on foot, though some areas are restricted due to the university presence. Visitors should check access rules in advance before planning a visit.
From 1973 to 1993, the Nessenreben training area hosted ParaCross, an international long-range reconnaissance competition featuring multiple disciplines. This made the location a significant gathering place for specialized units from several countries during those decades.
