Heinz-Sielmann-Weiher, Nature reserve in Billafingen, Germany.
Heinz-Sielmann-Weiher is a nature reserve near Billafingen featuring shallow water pools, ditches, reed beds, flowering borders, and field hedges surrounded by a water buffalo pasture. The entire site is accessible through marked paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
The wetland was established in 2005 as a pilot project by the Heinz Sielmann Foundation under ornithologist Professor Peter Berthold's guidance. Its purpose was to restore habitat for water and meadow birds in the region.
The site bears the name of renowned naturalist filmmaker Heinz Sielmann and is recognized locally as a vital refuge for birds. People come here to watch storks and other water birds that use the area as their home.
The site is easily accessible with an observation platform reachable via the old Roman road. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the ground can be muddy depending on the season.
The reserve is home to around 340 flowering plant species and serves as a nesting ground for white storks on specially built platforms. This stork presence makes the area a rare example of successful reintroduction in the region.
