Winklmoosalm, Mountain hut in Chiemgau Alps, Germany.
Winklmoosalm is a mountain hut in the Chiemgau Alps situated on open alpine meadow at about 1160 meters elevation. The simple building contains four double rooms and a dormitory, with facilities designed for self-catering stays.
The German Alpine Club's Oberland section began managing this shelter and maintained its traditional Bavarian design over many decades. The hut continues to operate following established Alpine hospitality patterns from earlier eras.
The hut embodies the way Alpine farmers have lived for centuries in these high meadows. Visitors experience a slower pace and connection to the mountains that shapes daily routines here.
The hut is reachable by a hiking path of about 4 kilometers from Seegatterl parking area or via nearby ski lifts during the snowy season. Guests should come prepared for basic conditions and understand that self-catering is expected.
Since 2018 the location holds certification as an international dark sky area, allowing night visitors to see stars without light pollution interfering. This rarity in Europe makes evening stays particularly rewarding for anyone interested in the night sky.
