Odins Raben und die Midgardschlange, Mythological sculpture near Stadtschloss, Weimar, Germany
Odins Raben und die Midgardschlange is a sculpture made of polished black diabase stone featuring two ravens standing about 1.05 meters tall. Between them stretch red sandstone tiles engraved with a snake pattern and game boards from different cultures.
Anne-Katrin Altwein created this artwork in 1992 as a modern interpretation of Norse mythology. The sculpture was installed on Burgplatz in front of the city castle to enrich the location with history and cultural meaning.
The two black ravens represent Norse deities of thought and memory, while the serpent symbolizes the boundary between worlds. This mythology remains alive today as visitors touch the figures and engage with the games engraved into the red sandstone tiles.
The sculpture sits outdoors on Burgplatz and is accessible at any time without requiring a specific entrance or admission. You can walk around the area, view the ravens from different angles, and explore the game tables.
The game tables engraved in the sandstone tiles display board games from different cultures around the world that visitors can play using colored beans. This merges ancient mythological symbols with an interactive, playful element that brings together people from diverse backgrounds.
