Cranachhaus

Cranachhaus, Renaissance building in Weimar, Germany

Cranachhaus is a Renaissance building on Weimar's marketplace featuring elaborate facade elements including decorative columns, shell niches, and round-arch ornaments. It stands opposite the town hall and defines much of the historic plaza's architectural character with its ornate design.

The building was designed by Nikolaus Gromann between 1547 and 1549 for Christian Brück, who married a daughter of painter Lucas Cranach the Elder. This family connection established it as a significant location in Weimar's artistic history.

The building is remembered for its connection to Lucas Cranach the Elder and his family, representing the prominence of artist families in Renaissance Weimar. Visitors today can sense how such residences served as centers of creative and social influence in the city.

Visitors should know that the building now houses a theater that hosts regular performances and is accessible only at certain times. It is best to check opening hours and performance schedules beforehand to experience both the interior and exterior of the building.

A winged serpent representing Lucas Cranach the Elder's coat of arms remains visible above the right arch of the facade. This detail reveals the former owner's proud connection to the famous artist's family.
