Markt, Central market square in Weimar, Germany.
Markt is the central square of Weimar, featuring a square paved area surrounded by Renaissance buildings with the Town Hall anchoring its western side. The square serves as the spatial heart of the old town and is crossed by several main streets.
The square originated around 1300 and became the main trading center of the city, eclipsing the earlier Herderplatz in importance. This shift marked the relocation of commercial life to this new central location.
The square serves as a gathering place throughout the year, hosting various markets and festivals that shape public life in the old town. Visitors experience here the rhythm of local commerce and community events that define the heart of the city center.
The square is easily accessible from multiple directions as several streets converge here including Kaufstraße, Windischenstraße, and Frauentorstraße. Visitors find a flat, paved surface for walking and exploring the surrounding old town.
The Neptunbrunnen on the northern side of the square is Weimar's oldest fountain, featuring a statue created by artist Martin Gottlieb Klauer in 1774. This fountain has shaped the appearance of the square for more than 2 centuries.
