Goethe-Nationalmuseum

The Goethe-Nationalmuseum is a literary museum in Weimar housed in the residence where the author himself lived. The exhibition contains an extensive collection of manuscripts, artworks, personal objects, and documents that cover different areas of his life and work.

The museum originated from a donation by Goethe's family after the famous writer ended his life in this house. The rooms were later opened to the public and still show how they were arranged during his time there.

The museum demonstrates how Goethe brought together his many interests under one roof, with writings, art collections, and scientific objects displayed side by side throughout the rooms. The way everything is arranged gives a sense of how an educated person of that era organized their intellectual life.

The museum sits in central Weimar and is easily reached on foot, with regular hours throughout the day. It is helpful to allow enough time to view the many items on display and explore the rooms themselves.

The writer's study room has been preserved as it was at the time of his death, with the original arrangement of books and furniture intact. Visitors can imagine how he sat at his desk creating some of his most famous works.
