Ashesi University, private university in Ghana
Ashesi University is a private institution in Akuapim South in eastern Ghana, about 40 kilometers from Accra. The campus covers roughly 100 acres with modern buildings, a library, health clinic, sports facilities, and a water innovation center that develops green solutions for Ghana's climate challenges.
The university was founded in 2002 after a team from the United States studied Ghanaian education needs and recognized the need for a locally-focused private institution. In 2018 it received a charter from the Ghanaian government, allowing it to award its own degrees rather than relying on external universities.
The name comes from the Akan language and means "beginning" or "start". On campus you notice buildings designed like traditional Ghanaian houses, and students gather regularly in open spaces to study together and share ideas.
The campus sits near Berekuso in eastern Ghana and is accessible by public transport or private vehicle from Accra. Visitors should know the campus is an open space to explore during daylight hours, with quiet areas for relaxation alongside busier zones filled with student activity.
The university is known for its strong Service Learning program where all students spend four years engaged in community projects, including a popular literacy program called 'Adesua ye' in Berekuso. Many graduates have gone on to start impressive social enterprises after graduation, continuing the tradition of community engagement.
