Greater Accra Region, Administrative region in southern Ghana
Greater Accra Region is an administrative district in southern Ghana that stretches along the coast of the Gulf of Guinea and includes the country's capital city. It contains government buildings, business districts, and the international airport that form the economic and political center of the nation.
This territory was established as an independent region in 1982 after having been part of the Eastern Region. The reorganization aimed to facilitate administration of the growing capital zone and support its development.
The Ga people have lived along this coastline for centuries and celebrate their harvest traditions with processions and dances each year. During these celebrations, families prepare dishes with maize and palm oil that recall the customs of their community.
The area is accessible through four major roads that connect the territory with other parts of the country. The airport is located near the capital and allows travelers to reach the different municipalities and districts.
A large share of the country's population lives in a small territory, making this coastal area one of the most densely inhabited parts of Ghana. This distribution reflects the pull of the capital zone for people from all parts of the nation.
