Zominthos

Zominthos is an excavated Minoan building on a plateau in Anogeia Municipality, Greece. The structure contains more than 100 rooms on the ground floor and spreads across a substantial area.

The site was discovered in 1982 by archaeologist Yannis Sakellarakis during excavations at this altitude. The walls that remain standing show the construction methods of the Minoan civilization.

The pottery workshop shows how skilled artisans worked with processed stone materials in this remote location. Visitors can see how specialized crafts were practiced at such high altitude.

The site sits about 8 kilometers west of Anogeia village in the foothills of Mount Ida and requires advance planning for a visit. Wear suitable footwear and be prepared for the high altitude conditions when exploring the ruins.

The building sits at 1200 meters altitude and likely served as a stopping point between Knossos and the Idaion Andron sanctuary cave near the peak of Mount Ida. This location on an important route opens a window into ancient trade paths and pilgrimage routes.
