Sfendoni Zoniana Cave, Show cave in Zoniana, Greece
Sfendoni Zoniana Cave is a show cave in Crete that stretches across a large underground area and passes through several distinct chambers. The passages are secured with solid walkways and ropes, and the walls display white limestone formations and tall columns.
Archaeological finds in the cave show that people lived here as far back as the Neolithic period. The pottery fragments and artifacts indicate that this location served as a dwelling or shelter across many centuries.
The cave takes its name from a resistance fighter from Sfakia who sought shelter in this natural formation during times of conflict. Local people connect this place with stories of courage and survival in the mountains.
Visitors can walk through most of the cave on marked paths secured with metal railings and ropes. The walkways are usable for most people, but there are some tight sections and uneven ground to watch for.
The cave contains rare cave pearls, small spherical formations that develop from calcite deposits accumulating in shallow underground pools. These tiny structures are not found in many caves and give this location geological significance.

Crete combines remnants of ancient civilizations with natural landscapes along its 1,050 km coastline. The island offers photographers a mix of archaeological sites like the Minoan palace at Knossos and historic settlements such as the Venetian harbor districts of Chania and Rethymno. Coastal formations range from the pink sand beaches of Elafonissi to the turquoise lagoon at Balos and the palm groves at Preveli and Vai. Mountain ranges in the interior contain gorges like Samaria and Aradena, along with remote villages such as Kritsa and Margarites where traditional ways of life continue. The photography spots in this collection show Crete's different sides. Beaches like Elafonissi, Balos, and Seitan offer colorful coastal shots, while sites like Spinalonga and Moni Arkadiou capture historical moments. Villages like Loutro and Kritsa give insight into daily life, and gorges like Samaria and Aradena reveal the dramatic landscape of the interior. Each place has its own light and its own story to tell.
