Attica Zoological Park, Wildlife park in Spata, Greece
Attica Zoological Park spans 20 hectares and houses more than 1,500 animals representing 220 different species across multiple specialized habitats and continental sections. The site is organized into thematic zones where visitors can observe mammals, birds, and reptiles from different geographic regions, while enclosures and aviaries are designed to replicate natural environments.
The facility began operations in May 2000 as a bird sanctuary containing 1,100 birds of 300 species before expanding to include many additional animal exhibits. Over time it evolved into a zoological park with a focus on species conservation and education for a broad audience.
The Greek Forest section houses native species including Eurasian lynxes, wild boars, grey wolves, and the Cretan wild goat known as kri-kri. These animals have lived in the Mediterranean region for centuries and show visitors the wildlife that has adapted to local habitats and climate conditions over time.
The park opens daily from 9 AM to 6 PM and offers annual membership cards for unlimited visits throughout the year. Visitors should plan several hours to explore the different areas and wear comfortable shoes, as pathways extend across the entire grounds.
The Indonesia section features specialized aviaries where visitors can observe rare bird species such as the Bali myna and Victorian crowned pigeon. These species are severely threatened in the wild and are maintained here as part of international conservation programs.
