Papingo, village in Greece
Papingo is a traditional mountain village in Zagori, northern Greece, built on the Astraka mountain. The settlement divides into two parts - Megalo Papigo and Mikro Papigo - featuring two to three-story stone houses set on steep slopes and surrounded by forests and mountains.
The village developed as a mountain settlement during the growth of the Zagori region and has been continuously inhabited and maintained by its residents over centuries. Its architecture and structure were shaped by the practical demands of mountain living.
The settlement takes its name from the ancient city of Papigus, reflecting a long connection to the region. The houses are still used by residents following traditional methods, with stone facades and simple structures that define mountain village life.
The place is reachable from Ioannina via a winding mountain road with tight turns that demands careful driving. Plan your visit during daylight hours, and many travelers prefer to stay overnight since guesthouses and hotels are available in the village.
Mikro Papigo holds Dragon Lake, a small lake perched on a cliff that overlooks a deep valley below. In the Megalo section, a private library houses around 1250 old books from the 18th and 19th centuries, offering visitors insight into the region's history.
