Mygdonia is a former municipality in Central Macedonia that included three main communities: Drymos, Liti, and Melissochori. The area was later incorporated into Oreokastro Municipality and connects to the wider Thessaloniki region.
The region gained importance when Alexander I of Macedon seized control, transforming it from territories of early inhabitants like the Pelasgians and Thracian tribes into a Macedonian stronghold. This conquest marked a shift toward Macedonian political dominance.
The Derveni papyrus, discovered in 1962 near Liti, stands as a fundamental ancient Greek philosophical text explaining aspects of Orphic religious practices. This discovery shows how intellectually vibrant the region was in antiquity.
