Tsivlou Lake sits on the slopes of Mount Helmos at 800 meters elevation, with blue-green waters surrounded by thick forest. The shore features wooden benches and open clearings where visitors can rest and look out over the water.
The lake formed in 1913 when a massive landslide blocked the Krathis River and changed the region forever. This natural event forced local residents to leave their original settlements and move elsewhere.
The nearby village of Zarouhla displays traditional mountain architecture with stone buildings and family-run tavernas serving regional dishes. Visitors can observe local life as residents move through the area going about their daily activities.
The lake is reached via a mountain road from Aigeira village that is straightforward to follow. It works best to arrive in the morning when the area is quieter and you have more space to yourself.
When the 1913 landslide happened, it briefly created a second water body upstream, but that dam gave way about ten months later. Only this lake remained as a lasting feature of the landscape.
