Pinios Lake, reservoir in Greece
Pinios Lake is an artificial reservoir in the Elis region, created by a dam built across the Pinios River. The largest reservoir in the Peloponnese spreads across a quiet landscape with trees and steep gorges, where the water reflects the sky and surrounding greenery.
The dam was built in 1968, standing about 50 meters tall and stretching about 2 kilometers across the Pinios River to store water for the region. This construction enabled better water control and supply for surrounding settlements and agriculture in this part of Elis.
The lake takes its name from the Pinios River, which flows through the valley and holds importance in local history. The surrounding landscape is used by people as a place of quiet reflection and connection to nature, where visitors walk the simple paths along the water and experience the stillness of the location.
The reservoir lies northeast of Amaliada and is easily reached by car, with parking available near the water for convenient access. Visitors find marked paths along the shore that invite walking, strolling, and relaxation.
The Pinios River was connected in Greek mythology to Hercules' feat of diverting its course to clean King Augeas' stables. This legendary tale gives the modern reservoir a historical depth, linking today's water management with ancient stories.
